Saul Broudy Performs American Folksongs of Work and Travel
Join Historic Germantown/Jim Dragoni as we present a special presentation by Saul Broudy, to be recorded in front of a studio audience on November 2nd at 4PM at Historic Germantown Headquarters, 5501 Germantown Ave, Phila PA 19144.
Though society is becoming increasingly homogeneous, regional expressive variation still exists and reflects the strength of our cultural differences. Saul presents grassroots songs from various regions, such as Louisiana, Texas, Pennsylvania, California, the Appalachians, and Canada, and discusses how these songs help us identify who we are and where we came from.
These songs are often found among various occupational groups, such as railroad workers, coal miners, farmers, hobos, truck drivers, and pilots. Looking at these occupational songs enables us to focus on the role this music played(plays) in the workers' lives.
Saul's music covers a wide range of grassroots American genres, from traditional ballads to bluegrass, country, blues, Cajun, and rockabilly. He holds a PhD degree in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania, and his shows aim to inform as well as entertain.
