This multi-site tour consists of a "behind the scenes" visit to the Deshler-Morris House, also known as the Germantown White House. Currently closed to the general public, due to an ongoing renovation project, guests will have exclusive access to the house with a NPS guide. Twice this house sheltered George Washington. In 1793, he took refuge here from the deadly yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. The following summer, it was a welcome retreat from the heat of the capital city.
Guests will also visit the Historic Germantown Museum and Germantown Historical Society archives & library to learn about the history of Market Square.
Guests will be broken into smaller groups and visit Lest We Forget Slavery Museum. This is the only museum in the Philadelphia region with artifacts from the transatlantic slave trade. The objects and guided tour will tell the history of millions of kidnapped Africans held in bondage and forced to provide free labor for decades.
The tour will conclude with a special event hosted by the Philly Kappa's who will be hosting a facility tour of The Kappa Achievement Center, with an emphasis on the history of the building under Kappa's stewardship since 1995 followed by a Meet & Greet with refreshments for the members, alumni and family members of Delta Sigma Theta from 10:45-11:45 AM.
The Kappa Achievement Center, a community resource and historic building that is part of the Germantown Urban Village Historic District, has been the home of the Philly Kappas since 1995.
